Birds of Mt. Wanda; A John Muir National Historic Site

Acorn Woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus)

Acorn Woodpeckers on one of many granary trees on Mt. Wanda in Martinez. These busy birds live in large groups, hoarding acorns and wedging them into holes for later use. Their unique "waka-waka" call can be heard quite often on the trails of Mt. Wanda.
