Yes, the Sandhill Cranes are starting to arrive at Woodbridge Ecological Reserve in Lodi! I pulled up to the parking lot at dawn on Saturday, September 27th, just in time to see a sedge (flock) of eight taking flight, heading for the local farmer's fields in order to forage for food. Luckily, a sedge of 12 stayed behind for a little while, giving me just enough time to get a few cool pics. Photographing these beautiful birds is truly a magical experience! I also spoke with a local birder who said that there was a small sedge of Sandhill Cranes that same morning on Desmond Road near the Cosumnes River Preserve in Galt. So cool! I think I'll be heading back there next weekend as well.
Sandhill Cranes are known for their dancing skills. Courting cranes stretch their wings, pump their heads, bow, and leap into the air in a graceful and energetic dance. (allaboutbirds.org)
